LFA Governance Board - Independent Members

We are looking for exceptional individuals who share our vision and want to help support and develop our exciting work, not simply educating the filmmakers of tomorrow but equipping them to thrive from day one in a competitive and demanding industry.

By joining our Governance Board alongside our current members, you will bring your skills and experience, your insights and your enthusiasm, and be able to influence our future direction as well as undertaking the core governance and oversight duties.

We meet four or five times a year, virtually and in person in London, with opportunities also to take part in our activities, attend the LFA annual Showcase and undertake special projects.

ABOUT THE LFA

Our vision is to be the educators of tomorrow’s world class filmmakers who believe film can positively influence the world. We strive to be the most innovative, hands-on film school embedded in the industry. Our students are inspired by a team of leaders in their areas of specialism and we seek to have our alumni regarded as the most employable by the industry.

We deliver multidisciplinary courses, including undergraduate and postgraduate programmes validated by the University of Derby, and short courses. We offer so much more than just an education in film. We welcome students who thrive in alearning environment that emulates the real world and as a result we produce world-class filmmakers.

ABOUT GOVERNANCE AT THE LFA

The London Film Academy is currently constituted as the trading entity of the Film Education Training Trust Limited (FETT), a private company limited by guarantee and trades as London Film Academy. The FETT delegates certain powers to the Governance Board and to the Joint Principals.

The Joint Principals are responsible for the day-to-day running of the LFA, while the Governance Board oversees the management of the LFA and monitors and reviews matters of strategic significance. The Governance Board complies with the regulatory framework of the Office for Students. The list of its responsibilities and a full description of the LFA governance arrangements can be found here.

The Governance Board comprises both the Joint Principals and independent members, with an independent chair. The term of office is two years, renewable. Members of the Governance Board are not legal directors under Company Law and serve pro bono with expenses repaid.

At present there is one subcommittee of the Governance Board, the Risk Sub-Committee, which reviews finance, resources and property, and monitors risks to the business. It also oversees arrangements for internal and external audits.

ABOUT YOU

We are seeking exceptional board level leaders with relevant industry, education and commercial experience to shape and drive forward the LFA’s strategic direction and help achieve our vision. We are especially looking for individuals with a track record in one or more of the following areas:

  • Film industry
  • Education leadership
  • Personnel and development
  • Legal and compliance
  • Student safeguarding

You will also bring experience in several of the following areas:

  • Board experience or understanding of governance best practice

  • Director / Producer / Broadcaster

TIME COMMITMENT

The Governance Board usually meets four times a year, with meetings lasting about two hours, plus occasional ad hoc meetings. Meetings are held virtually, typically with one in-person meeting in London, travel expenses are covered.

For those who also participate on the Risk Sub Committee, there will be an additional four virtual meetings per annum, prior to the Governance Board meetings.

Participation beyond the formal meetings is encouraged, for example attending the annual Showcase and undertaking special projects.

# An individual with a legal and/or compliance background able to support and guide the board on key legal, compliance and regulatory matters, safeguarding the organisation’s legal standing, reputation and ethical conduct. Proven expertise in managing regulatory compliance efforts, mitigating legal and compliance risks and advising in legal disputes.
